CHAPTER 16

Barbara, Dr. Mendoza’s receptionist, shot her another sideways glance as she sat in the waiting room. Lissa had been late two appointments in a row because public transportation was such a joke in this area, and she didn’t want to endure another long-winded lecture on taking her therapy seriously. The good doctor had no idea how seriously she took her sessions, so this time, she was early. Way too early.

She shoved in her earbuds and played with her phone, turning up the volume to block out the noise coming from the inner office. But there was no blocking the ruckus as it steadily grew louder and more threatening. Now she understood why Dr. Mendoza separated his appointments as much as he did. Finally, she heard the door crash and jumped, involuntarily looking up to see what was going on. “Shane?”

Shane jerked back. “Lissa? What are you doing here?”

“I’ve been seeing Dr. Mendoza for a while now; he’s getting me ready for...for January. What are you doing here?”

“I’ve been seeing the Dozer for years.” He looked at the door and screamed, “NOT THAT THE QUACK HAS DONE ME ANY FUCKING GOOD!”

Mendoza. The Dozer. Wow. What were the odds?

“How did you stumble onto THE OLD FART?” he shouted over his shoulder.

For as much as Shane had resembled his mother at the Clausen Construction Christmas party, he was pure Brian at the moment—the anger pulsing off him in waves. She wasn’t sure exactly what shade of red he was, but if it wasn’t wine, it was damned close. She cupped his hot cheek.

“Ethan found him. If I had to guess, he asked Nicole to check around for recommendations, and she asked your dad. Everyone knew you were...”

“Insane? Unstable? A loser?”

His anger dissolved, leaving him more like a whipped puppy than the vicious pit bull he’d been mere seconds ago. His defeated expression pulled on her too-tender heart. “No, having issues. Anger issues, you told me that much Thanksgiving night. Now that I’ve met your brothers and father, I understand why. It seems like the doc is helping you express that anger. Maybe he’s doing you more good than you think.”

He rested his forehead on hers. “How can you always do this? Find the good in everyone?”

It was a skill born from pain. From the need to find some kind of silver lining in the dark cloud of her life. Without that coping mechanism, she would have gone stark raving mad from the futility of it all.

“Think about it, if I’m here, I must be an insane, unstable, loser too. Or else I’m having issues that I need a little help dealing with. I don’t judge you. What part of ‘I accept you unconditionally’ don’t you get? You’re perfect the way you are. I don’t know how many times you need to hear it before you start believing it, but I will say it again and again until you finally believe me.”

“Yeah, you’ve said it before, but please don’t stop. I’m starting to believe you, but with my thick Tobin skull, it might take a few decades to penetrate.
